This was originally a recipe for breadsticks. If that is what you want, just make them skinnier.

bunsThree-quarter cup milk
2 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoon soft shortening
1 tablespoon oil one package active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 egg, beaten

  1. Scald milk.
  2. Remove from heat and add sugar, salt and shortening.
  3. Blend and cool to lukewarm.
  4. Sprinkle yeast over warm water.
  5. Stir to dissolve.
  6. Add the milk mixture and 1/2 cup flour to the east.
  7. Mix in breadmaker at medium speed until smooth, scraping the bowl occasionally. 100 strokes if by hand.
  8. Add more flour, a little at a time, until dough leaves the sides of the bowl.
  9. Turn dough onto lightly floured board.
  10. Knead until smooth and elastic: about eight minutes.
  11. Place in lightly greased bowl.
  12. Turn dough over to grease top also.
  13. Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled in size: about 45 minutes.
  14. Bake at 350 until browned
